A STUDY ON BEACH PROTECTION USING NAHRIM COASTAL PROTECTION AND EXPANSION (NEXC) BLOCKS SYSTEM FOR PANTAI BATU 5, PORT DICKSON, NEGERI SEMBILAN

Coastal erosion is a natural phenomenon, resulting from the interactions of natural processes, human interventions and Mother Nature systems. Among the negative impact of coastal erosion is like the loss of land, property and human lives. There are two methods to combat the coastal erosion problem, either by using hard engineering approach or soft engineering approach or combination of both. The study was conducted to combine these two approach by introducing NEXC (NAHRIM Coastal Protection and Expansion) Blocks System as a dual function innovation product. The purpose of the study is to examine the performance of NEXC Block System in terms of stability, effectiveness and its ability to function well in reducing coastal erosion as well as naturally re-nourish the sandy beach. This study involves product development and design, laboratory physical modelling, deployment and installation of the products on site at Pantai Batu 5, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan which has suffered serious erosion (Category 1). The results show that NEXC Blocks product have promising performance and has the potential of being commercialized. In laboratory testing, the NEXC blocks is proven to be stable, and effective in reducing erosion. However, scouring problem is identified at the toe without affecting the structural integrity. Hence, toe protection for the structure is crucial and should be enhanced. Observation and analysis of the NEXC Blocks System performance onsite found that the blocks function well in controlling erosion and re-nourish the beach through the accretion process. Installation of this product have managed to safeguard the assets of the hotel.
