Flood Hazard Mapping Using Two-Dimensional River Modelling For Sungai Muar, Johor

Over the years, Muar River or Sungai Muar experienced numerous flooding as being recorded in 1971, 1982, 1987, 1988, 1992, 1995 and 2006 and 2007. The areas affected by flooding included Tangkak, Serom, Kundang, Kesang, Gersik, Bukit Kepong, Bukit Serampang, Lenga, Jorak, Air Hitam, Sri Menanti, Sg Balang and Segamat. Many studies conducted in finding solutions to overcome the intense problems of flooding in the study area. In addition, it is also necessary to develop flood hazard maps to help the local authority and community in the event of floods and minimise losses. The objectives of the study are to develop a 2-Dimensional River Model covering the flood plain of Muar River from Kuala Pilah to the river mouth for a distance of 280 km and to generate flood risk map for various return periods. The total catchment area of Muar river basin is 6149 km2. There are 25% of forest areas with the rest of agriculture, housing and other land uses within Muar river basin. InfoWorks River Simulation is used to model the Muar River while historical flood events were used to calibrate and verify the model. From the study, it is found that 2-Dimensional hydrodynamic model is useful in developing a better quality of flood maps based on available LiDAR informations. It is beneficial as a planning and design tools for the local authority and local community in preparing evacuation plan.
