Harnessing the Power of Ocean Waves: A Case Study of NAHRIM-WEC

The NAHRIM-WEC (Wave Energy Converter) system represents an innovative approach to electric power generation, utilizing ocean waves as its primary energy source. This project encompasses the development and evaluation of a prototype designed to harness wave energy efficiently through a floating structure for stability and an electric induction system employing magnetostrictive principles with a charge amplifier to enhance energy conversion. Field trials demonstrated promising results, showcasing a high level of efficiency in power generation. However, ensuring the watertight integrity of the WEC structure remains critical, as extreme maritime conditions pose risks of sudden submersion and seawater intrusion, which could accelerate corrosion in electrical circuits. Key challenges include optimizing the structural design for greater stability and refining the winding configuration to improve electrical output. Future advancements should focus on enhancing the system’s durability, conducting further performance evaluations across diverse oceanic conditions, and reducing overall costs. Despite these challenges, the NAHRIM-WEC system presents a viable renewable energy solution, offering potential contributions toward reducing fossil fuel dependence, mitigating environmental impact, and advancing sustainable energy initiatives.
