Seminar Proceedings on Research in Sea Level Rise & Adaptation Measures

In 2010, NAHRIM under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE)conducted "The study of the impact of climate change to sea level rise in Malaysia" in which the effects of climate change on sea level rise (SLR) was projected for 2020, 2040, 2060, 2080 and 2100 along the coastline of Malaysia, based on historical tide gauge data (1984 – 2010) and satellite altimetry data (1993 – 2010), and assimilated with the Atmosphere-Ocean Global Climate Models or General Circulation Models (AOGCMs). The projections show that areas along the coast of Malaysia will have SLR between 0.25 - 1.06 m in 2100. In 2011, NAHRIM carried out studies on the impact of SLR, focusing on producing Inundation Maps for the potential areas that are likely to experience the highest SLR such as Kedah, Kelantan, Sarawak River Estuary and East Coast of Sabah, which is between 0.4 - 1.1 m, to assess the SLR impact on coastal infrastructure, development and the socio-economic of the local community. The studies were done by zoning the potential flooded areas, based on combination of sea level rise rate and profile contour of the land in the coastal area for each selected location. In 2012, NAHRIM proceed with Inundation Maps Studies for Batu Pahat, Port Kelang and Sandakan to assess the potential inundated areas for each location and their impacts on coastal infrastructure, development and the socio-economic. At the same time, NAHRIM also carried out JV Studies with other agencies such as Town Planning Dept. (JPBD), universities (UPM and UMT), Survey Dept. (JUPEM) and Mineral & Geoscience Dept. (JMG) for studies on the impacts of SLR on water quality, salt intrusion, vertical land movement, marine phytoplankton carbon uptake, Paleo SLR and local town planning on Kuala Terengganu.
