FINAL REPORT THE STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF EFFLUENT DISCHARGE AT PANTAI BATU FERINGGI, PENANG
Batu Feringgi is located along the North East cost of Penang Island and the beach is one of the local attraction of Penang among the tourist. It is just 11 km from the Georgetown with the stretch of beach along 4 km. All tourist attraction such as street market, beach activity, restaurant, hotel and chalet have been established to cater the need of the tourism industry. Due to its attraction, it gain a lot of local and foreign tourist every year and one of the economic contribution to the country. However, On February 2014, pollution of Batu Feringgi beach was one of the main issues to our country. A pollution of black water with the size of football field has been spotted at Feringgi beach. This source of pollution is mainly from the Sungai Batu Feringgi which stretch along 100 meters starting from the bridge of main road to the rivermouth. Due to the low discharge of the Batu Feringgi river and combination siltation problem at the rivermouth worsen the condition. During the low tide, the water from Batu Feringgi river stuck in the river and only been flushed away when the high tide. When it released to the sea, this black pollution will accumulated in front of the beach for a certain period of time. A discharge of sewage from Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) and other pollutant from hotel, restaurant and shops nearby are the main factors that contribute to the pollution at Batu Feringgi beach. The possibility of black pollution is suspect to be bacteria called Escerica Coli or E-coli. Test result for both faecal coliform of E-coli reading in the river were about 16,000 c.f.u. per 100m which considered worse and not recommend for any water activities. Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia (DID) has built new marine outlet system to ensure that all river discharge from Sungai Batu Feringgi can be flow away to the sea naturally. This marine outlet is design with the length of 120 meter from the rivermouth with the separate outlet is design for the normal discharge form the river and IWK discharge. The main design is purposely to overcome the siltation problem at the Sungai Batu Feringgi rivermouth especially during the monsoon event. IWK also has upgrade their sewerage treatment plant to cater Standard A effluent which will be discharge to the sea. Based on the marine outlet design by DID, there are no proper study to weather the 120 meter length of outlet is sufficient to ensure that all the discharge from Batu Feringgi river will not flow back to the beach. Hence the main purposed of this study is carried out to determine the optimum length of marine outlet at Sungai Batu Feringgi to ensure that all of the pollutants from the river will be flushed away to the offshore without coming back along the beach.
