A CWS for wastewater treatment is usually land-intensive and requires more space than the conventional wastewater treatment systems. CWS is mechanically a simple treatment system that relies primarily on passive treatment processes. Hence, a CWS is favourable for use in rural or low population density areas due to relatively low maintenance compared to conventional treatment systems and can be easily constructed with local materials. From a global perspective, CWSs are gaining popularity in developed and developing countries due to cost-effectiveness and environmental awareness in the wastewater treatment technology.
