POTENTIAL OF BANK INFILTRATION (BI) IN SUNGAI MUDA BASIN, PULAU PINANG AND KEDAH FOR PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY

Bank Infiltration (BI) is apromising technology that helps improving water quality parameter quantity for water supply. ii. A full pumping test program was successfully carried out on the exploration alluvium pumping wells, TW1 and TW2 at the banks of the Sungai Muda. The pumping test includes a four step drawdown test, a 72 hours constant discharge test and recovery test. The constant discharge was conducted with a pumping rate of 60 m3/hr . Based on the pumping result, the Test Well (TW) was capable to produce more than 120 m3/hours (3 MLD) with the drawdown less than 6 m. iii. The study has shown that turbidity, total solid, sulphate and nitrate were reduced significantly through the natural filtration systems of BI. There is great potential in developing BI technologies for water treatment in developing countries such in Malaysia. From the result, it clearly shows that BI capable to reduce pollution .The use of BI will also lessen the over-dependence on surface water as the source of public water supply system as BI also taps groundwater at the same time. iv. BI method depends very much on the hydrogeology (hydraulic conductivity, saturated depth, transmissivity, porosity, lithology, storage coefficient and travel time) of the area for natural water treatment to proceed. Natural filtration is a success factor in getting good water quality. The thickness of the aquifer in the study area which is more than 5 m and consist of medium to coaser sand with bedrock consist of shale. v. The results for water quality test indicates that Sungai Muda site is suitable for source abstraction for protection of future water security and will able to produce enough quantity of drinking water for the population of Sungai Muda Basin, Pulau Pinang and Kedah
