Iniatiatives for Sabo Works at Gunung Jerai, Kedah
The construction of structures using Sabo technology was first proposed in Malaysia to block debris from Gunung Kinabalu in 2018 due to the need to take into account on the requirements of earthquake -related specifications. During the proposal in 2018, two (2) Sabo Structures were proposed to block the debris from the top of the mountain and if the project goes ahead, it will be the first Sabo Structure in Malaysia. In the plan, the Sabo Structure is designed to reduce debris flow from continuing to flow into low -lying areas such as Kota Belud via the Kedamaian River. The debris flow will be accumulated at the top of the structure. Sabo technology is proposed again after the debris flow event at Gunung Jerai on 18 August 2021. A total of 6 suggested locations will be considered to build Sabo Structures which will be focused on Batu Hampar River and Bujang River, Tupah for the first phase. Apart, technical support team lead by NAHRIM with local universities (UTM, USM, UKM) and Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) and JICA for the initial concept design proposal were established in August 2021.
