An Assessment of River Morphology Changes for Segamat River, Muar River Basin
In general, urbanization will lead to various environment-related issues within a river system, such as urban channel and river bank erosion and sedimentation problems, floods, water quality degradation and disruption to the ecosystem. Apart from development, river dredging activities and sand mining will also cause the instability of the river morphology. In view of its negative impacts to the river system, an assessment on the river morphology for Segamat River Basin has been conducted. The study aimed to examine the processes of erosion and deposition of river morphology and propose strategic measures to minimize the effects of erosion and sedimentation along the river. Sediment transport modelling using InfoWorks Catchment Modelling (ICM) has been carried out for 10-, 50-, 100- and 1000-year ARI based on the runoff hydrograph from the main outlet of sub-basins to Segamat River. The main input to the sediment transport modeling includes river geometry data, rainfall data, water level data and sediment sampling data. The simulation results highlight the large variability in channel morphology along a reach, where the sediment transport model predicts more sediment deposition at the middle reach of Segamat River. Consequently, it is recommended to developing an action plans in guiding the policy makers and stakeholders, especially sand dredging or sand extraction activities shall be well planned and maintained via systematic approach, involving Erosion and Sedimentation Control Plan (ESCP) as one of the Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Segamat River.
