WATER SUPPLY SECURITY OF RIVERBANK FILTRATION: A CASE STUDY OF THREE SITES IN THE PENINSULAR MALAYSIA
In this study, three case studies were conducted in Peninsular Malaysian to investigate and evaluate the performance of the Riverbank Filtration (RBF) process in the urban tropical regions of the country where several anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, industrial, and the municipal inflows have affected the surface water. Three different sites near the Linggi River, Langat River, and Muda River were studied on their suitability in constructing and developing the RBF systems. This paper aimed to investigate and study the selected operational RBF sites in the country (under investigation since 2012) and thereafter elucidate more potential RBF sites depending on the water issues and for that reason, geophysical data, sieve (particle size) analysis, pumping test data and water quality data techniques were carried out in this research. First, in the early stage of the investigation, geoelectric resistivity was performed to determine the suitability of the geology and the hydrogeological characteristics of the study area for establishment of RBF sites. Based on geophysical result, piezometer and test wells were drilled and developed. The pumping test was conducted to determine the factors and processes controlling the groundwater and surfacewater interaction. The hydrogeological suitability which is based on the drilling at the potential sites and then, monitoring the various water quality parameters. After evaluation, it seems that Malaysia emphasized good hydrogeological conditions which connected the river and aquifers in the three sites.
