FINAL REPORT BIODIGESTER PIONEER PROJECT AT ZOO NEGARA, MALAYSIA
Organic waste can indeed be used as a renewable resource through a biodigester system while reducing water pollution. This idea was proposed by YB Dato 'Sri Dr. James Dawos Mamit, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) during his visit to the National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM) in December 2013. YB Dato 'Sri Dr. James Dawos Mamit, NRE and NAHRIM hops that the biodigester system can help reduce water pollution load to rivers, lakes, groundwater, marine and water dam; reducing Green House Gas emissions (GHG) from various organic waste; provide a variety of uses such as electricity and cooking gas; reduce odor pollution and flies. In the biodigester, microorganisms are used to assimilate various organic waste into new energy sources, namely biodigester (methane) capable of generating electric power supply through the process of anaerobic digestion. Organic wastes including nutrients that have been fully digested, leaving the biodigester system as an organic fertilizer that can be used for agriculture and landscaping. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising technology that could effectively address the problem of waste disposal yielding valuable output like biogas and fertilizer. Recycling the animal residue reduces the uncontrolled emissions of methane (CH4) during the storage and avoids contamination of surface and groundwater systems (Romano et. al., 2006). Typically biogas from the digester is composed of 55 – 75% methane, 30 – 45% carbon dioxide and a trace amount of hydrogen, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide and water vapor (Igoni et. al, 2008).
