THE PERFORMANCE TEST OF RAM PUMP RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

The Construction Research Institute of Malaysia (CREAM) had appointed the National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), throthe ugh Hydraulic and Instrumentation Laboratory, to execute research entitled: ‘The Performance Test Of Ram Pump Research And Development Project On Sustainable Village And Affordable House Using Solar Energy For Rural Communities And Remote Areas [Phase 1: Performance Test By Ram Pump System] The objectives of the study are to conduct a performance test on the ram pump to identify optimum sustainable water flow and to investigate maintenance input during the performance test. In this study, the Ram Pump will go through sixth (6) testing scenarios in order to conclude the Ram Pump performance. The basic concept of the ram pump is it utilised the momentum of a relatively large amount of moving water to deliver a smaller amount of water uphill. During the testings, the sources of water are located above the Ram Pump location, simulated as an upstream river. From the study, it was found that the Ram Pump could perform under different variations of water sources parameter. However, in order to ensure continuous and stable water supply to the Ram Pump, the study recommended that a suitable size dam be constructed before the Ram Pump. The result of this study also found that Ram Pump havhas encouraging potential in supplying water for the rural and commercial communities near rivers, at almost free maintenance. Further studies are recommended to improvise findings towards Ram Pump commercialization. Annual hydrological data of river stream found as prerequisitee towards commercialization.
