DRILLING AND CONSTRUCTION OF GROUNDWATER TUBE WELLS ATCHUPING VALLEY DEVELOPMENT AREA

Drilling and construction of two (2) units of 152mm (6”) diameter tubewell at Chuping, Perlis were developed to fulfil the water requirement at Chuping Valley. Explorations of tubewells were conducted at the proposed project area on 29 April 2017 until 12 June 2017. Two of five units of exploration wells were successfully constructed in the flat area at Chuping, Perlis. The success exploration wells, referred as TW 1 and TW2. TW1 reaches at depth 38.0m, with the screen at 9.0m until 27.0m. The lithology consists of reddish brown sandy SILT from the top to a depth of 5.0 meters, followed by red to brownish red moderately fractured SANDSTONE up to 21.0 meters. This is followed by grey to whitish grey moderately weathered DOLOMITE up to 38.0 meters. As for TW2, the exploration well reaches a depth of 57.0m, with the screen at 36.6m until 54.0m. The lithology consists of reddish brown clayey SILT from the top to a depth of 7.0 meters, followed by white to light grey moderately weathered and highly fractured of DOLOMITE up to 31.0 meters. This is followed by white to light grey moderately weathered and slightly fractured of DOLOMITE up to 57.0 meters. Meanwhile, 3 exploration wells is fail due to lack of groundwater potential, is labelled as PW A 1, PWA2 and PWA3. Drilling of PWA1 reaches at depth 75.0m, PWA3 reaches at depth 15.0m and PWA2 reaches at depth 130.0m. Pumping test that were carried out on the existing tubewell and computer analysis of the pumping test data shows that Well 1 is capable of producing 23.00m3 /hour and Well 2 is capable of producing 25.00m3 /hour of groundwater yield, which is the safe and recommended pumping rate. The water quality shows both of groundwater is generally of good quality, with most of the parameters are within the limits of the national standard for drinking water quality by the Ministry of Health (MOH), Malaysia (2004), with the exception of a slightly higher of Nitrate content for Wells 1 and 2 (existing well). A simple aeration and filtration can be used to get reduced the nitrate content. A groundwater remediation is needed to cleanup of contaminated groundwater to levels that are in compliance with regulatory limits. Regular measurements of the water levels in the tube well are to be maintained and regular water quality test to be conducted to ensure that there is no deterioration of water quality over time due to anthropogenic activities in the vicinity.
