Geophysical investigation for groundwater potential of Kawasan Pembangunan Lembah Chuping, Perlis, Malaysia

Geophysical investigation for groundwater potential of Chuping Valley Development Area, Perlis, Malaysia has been carried out with the aim of delineating suitable site for groundwater development and estimating the depth to aquifer. Electrical resistivity profiling techniques using Schlumberger configuration were used to delineate the subsurface geology of the study area. For the multi-electrode resistivity survey, the Schlumberger array was conducted by employing six (6) resistivity survey lines, where data were collected by using the ABEM Terrameter SAS 4000 and ABEM LUND ES464 electrode selector system, and processed by using RES2DINV software. The images were presented in the form of two-dimensional (2D) resistivity profiles providing a clear view of the distribution Lithological, the study area is consisting of Kubang Pasu Formation and Chuping Formation. Geophysical analysis of the multi-electrode resistivity survey shows that the study area generally consists of three (3) resistivity zones based on their resistivity values, which are the high resistivity zone (Zone I), medium resistivity zone (Zone II), and low resistivity zone (Zone III). From three resistivity survey lines in the study area, it can be concluded that the high resistivity zone has the resistivity values of 2000Ωm–3000Ωm (indicated by the colour of light red to dark purple) and can be interpreted as the fresh dolomite. Meanwhile, the medium resistivity zone has the resistivity values of 150Ωm – 2000Ωm (indicated by the colour of green to brown) and can be interpreted as the Kubang Pasu Formation. Lastly, the low resistivity zone has the resistivity values of 5Ωm – 150Ωm (indicated by the colour of dark blue to light blue) and can be interpreted as the potential groundwater zones. The results of the resistivity survey are generally consistent with lithology units observed in outcrops. The intersection between Line 1, Line 4 and Line 6 with Line 3 and provides a good correlation of the field data. The integration of geological and geophysical surveys has provided a more accurate interpretation on the groundwater investigation of the study area, in particular for locating drilling sites. Groundwater resources are more potentially accumulated in these areas where potential groundwater zones in the study area can be classified as deep hard rocks aquifers. Resistivity survey Line is located in a wide open field with the maximum penetration depth 150m. The suggestion drilling locations are mark with the black line in the profile.
