Physical Modelling Testing For Water Infrastructure: A Prerequisite for Hydraulic Engineering
It is a known and widely accepted fact among the hydraulic engineering professionals that physical modelling is not only a choice but an essential tool for testing water infrastructures before its construction due to its ability to solve complex hydraulic problems which otherwise cannot be solved analytically or by numerical modelling. This paper highlights selected case studies conducted in NAHRIM’s hydraulic laboratory to illustrate how physical modeling plays an important role in verifying and optimizing the initial design of hydraulic structures, reveal potential demerits of a proposed hydraulic design and explore solutions; and its usage as complementary tool to numerical modeling.
