Integrating Rainwater Harvesting With Water Reuse For Physical Modelling In NAHRIM Hydraulic And Instrumentation Laboratory

This paper describe the concept and practice of integrating rainwater harvesting with water reuse for physical modelling purposes in Hydraulic and Instrumentation Laboratory (MHI), National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), Seri Kembangan, Malaysia. Physical modelling provides researchers with an opportunity to test and verify prototype performance in a relatively low-cost and easily modified model. Nonetheless, hydraulic physical modelling activities uses a large amount of water and there is an urgent need to explore a viable alternative which will give the facilities’ owner self-sufficiency; and consequently reduce water bills to meet the increasing requirements of physical modeling experiments. This paper also describes the rationale of integrating rainwater harvesting and water reuse components in the laboratory water supply system for physical modeling purposes. The economics and water quality aspects of integrated rainwater harvesting with water reuse are also briefly touched upon.
