Hydrodynamic Modelling at Mangrove Rehabilitation Sites for Mangrove Growth and Survival in Malaysia
Recognising the importance of mangrove forest, the Government of Malaysia has encouraged the replanting activities along the coast to increase the resilience of the coastal area against tsunami, high waves, and storm surges. However, assessment of the proposed planting area is crucial to ensure the success of the project. These can be achieved through hydrodynamic numerical modelling where the wave and current conditions surrounding to the proposed area can be predicted. To develop the hydrodynamic model and calibration of the model output, marine data collection consists of water level, current speed and direction, wave height and direction, total suspended sediment and bathymetric survey will be carried out. The calibrated results will then extract and input into the e-PESISIR system developed by ARSM and JPSM, to be used as a guideline in selecting the mangrove replanting site.
