Chapter 15: Hydrodynamic Modelling at Mangrove Rehabilitation Sites for Mangrove Growth and Survival in Malaysia

Recognising the importance of mangrove forest, the Government of Malaysia has encouraged the replanting activities along the coast to increase the resilience of the coastal area against tsunami, high waves, and storm surges. however, assessment of the proposed planting area is crucial to ensure the success of the project. these can be achieved through hydrodynamic numerical modelling where the wave and current conditions surrounding to the proposed area can be predicted. t develop the hydrodynamic model and calibration of the output, marine data collection consists of water level, current speed and direction, wave height and direction, total suspended sediment and bathymetric survey were carried out. The calibrated results were then extracted and deposited into the National Coastal Area Information Management System (e-PESISIR) developed by Malaysian Space Agency (MySA) and Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia (FDPM), to be used as a guide in selecting the suitable mangrove replanting site.
