Synthesis of Microwave-Assisted Mango Peel Based Activated Carbon for Methylene Blue Dye Removal

Methylene blue (MB) imparts negative effects towards human and aquatic creatures. One of the most effective methods to treat dyes wastewater is using activated carbon (AC) in the adsorption process. Thus, this study aimed to treat MB dye from aqueous solution using mango peel based activated carbon (MPAC). MPAC was produced from mango peel through microwave heating approach with power of activation of 440 W and time of activation of 2.17 min, under purging through the effect of carbon dioxide, CO2. It was found that when MB starting concentration altered from 25 to 300 mg/L, MB amount adsorbed by MPAC that rose from 21.25 to 113.61 mg/g, and MB removal decreased from 84.99 to 37.87%, after 22 h. Isotherm and kinetic data for MB-MPAC adsorption system followed Langmuir and PSO models, respectively, with Langmuir maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 196.08 mg/g being obtained. Langmuir isotherm signifies monolayer coverage of MB dye onto MPAC’s surface.

Langmuir isotherm signifies monolayer coverage of MB dye onto MPAC’s surface.
