ECO-FRIENDLY RIVERBANK PROTECTION METHODS FOR SUNGAI LANGAT TRIBUTARY DURING EXTREME RAINFALL EVENTS

This project was awarded on the 26th August 2020, focusing on the slope protection at a riverbank of Alur Ilmu, one of the tributaries of Sungai Langat. The Alur Ilmu conveys a significant portion of generated stormwater from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The Alur Ilmu has the potential to be a recreational area and is a site for the voluntary work to increase awareness of the importance of the river for both local communities and environmentalists. Riverbank erosion is not uncommon along the Sungai Langat due to their soft-ground, unprotected banks and high flow discharges. With the understanding the riverbanks are left to natural conditions, natural events such as erosion and land subsidence occur with extreme rainfall and overflow affecting the integrity of the riverbanks. Debris flow due to runoff can be seen continuously deposited even hours after rainfall had stopped indicating progressive failure of the slopes. These slopes, with partially-saturated soil properties, tends to hysteresis behaviour, hence, affecting the soil shear strength via excessive moisture. The soil, which then can be categorised as having poor geotechnical properties, are susceptible to cause foundation damages.
