Noticing the serious effects caused by extreme floods on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, namely the states of Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu in December 2014, a Cabinet meeting held on 7 January 2015 agreed and mandated the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) to carry out a comprehensive study to identify the leading causes that led to the previous extreme flood event. NRE, through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), has undertaken preliminary assessment in identifying the causes of flooding from the aspect of rainfall, climate change and land-use factors, as well as recommendations for the handling of and preparation for flood disaster. This report elaborates the results of the hydrological analysis of the December 2014 flood events affecting the states of Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The findings were presented by Ir. Mohd Zaki Mat Amin on 12th March 2015 in ‘Mini Lab Mengenal Pasti Punca Banjir Luar Biasa di Negeri Pantai Timur Semenanjung Malaysia’ at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Putrajaya.
